What ChatGPT is genuinely excellent at
Explaining a concept five different ways until one lands. This is the thing it does better than most tutors, and it does not get tired on the fifth attempt. If you do not understand the chain rule, a general model will get you there.
- Concept explanation at any level of patience you need.
- Working step by step through a problem you supply in full.
- Critiquing your own writing — structure, clarity, argument gaps.
- Generating practice problems for well-defined topics.
- Translating dense textbook language into something readable.
For all of that, a general model is the right tool and a course-specific one is overkill. Use it.
Where it quietly fails
The failure mode is not that it says "I do not know." It is that it answers anyway, fluently, about a course it has no information about.
A general model will never tell you it has not read your syllabus. It will simply answer as though it had.

The notation problem is worse than it sounds
Different courses teach the same material with genuinely different conventions — sign conventions in physics, notation in linear algebra, which formula sheet is permitted, whether your professor wants Riemann sums before or after the fundamental theorem. A general model averages over every textbook ever written and hands you the most common convention, which may not be yours.
On a homework problem this costs you points. On an exam it costs you the question. And because the reasoning looked correct, most students never trace the error back to the mismatch.
The academic integrity line
Worth stating plainly: neither tool should write your assignment. The distinction that matters to most honor codes is between understanding the material and producing the artifact. Asking either system to explain why an approach works is study. Asking it to generate the submission is not, and no amount of paraphrasing changes that.
The practical split
Use a general model for thinking. Use a course-aware tool for anything that depends on facts specific to your class. Most students need both, and the mistake is assuming the first can do the second's job.
So — is it enough?
If your semester is one or two classes and you are organized by nature, probably yes. If you are carrying fifteen-plus credits across five courses with different late policies, different weights, and lectures you cannot fully capture in real time, then no — not because the model is weak, but because it is answering with a blindfold on.
The honest version: ChatGPT solves the understanding problem. It does not solve the logistics problem, and for most students drowning in a fall semester, logistics is what is actually drowning them.
